Woeful Weather

Buffalo October Storm 5

The weather up here in New York has been a little bit less than perfect the past few days. Wednesday afternoon, I had to take the Subway into Manhattan to attend a gallery viewing with my photography class. I was stupid enough to assume that I could walk easily from Union Square to the gallery area of Chelsea. Even with my umbrella, the majority of my clothing was soaking wet even before I was half way there. There really is nothing more uncomfortable than walking in shoes that are entirely saturated with water. Well, besides perhaps getting a root canal without anesthetic and being forced to watch Will Ferrell act.

I trekked my way through a wet and windy hell of apocalyptic rain in order to get to the meeting point (a small artist bookstore) only to find that just one other student had actually managed to make it. Our teacher, having no attention span whatsoever (a trait I really kind of like about her), refused to wait for the other students to show up and we went back into the drizzle to visit galleries.

Yesterday, while the rain was no so bad as to cause airplanes to crash into apartment buildings, the weather was still pretty miserable. For the first time this year, I’ve felt what felt like actual autumn. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring my coat with me to college. After walking with a friend through the cold, windy campus to the pizza shop, I found that an entire part of the ceiling in the building our cafeteria is in had come down due to rain damage.

Still, my weather situation is not nearly as bad as the one my family is experiencing back at home. I woke up this morning to find nearly eleven missed calls on my cell phone, some as early as six in the morning from my mother. I was worried I had overspent on the debit card yet again and I called my mother back on the way to my Art History class. Apparently, she had been calling to make sure I hadn’t gone home with Russell for the weekend because Buffalo was in a state of emergency to do a freak snow storm. She told me that basically every tree on our street had fallen down from the weight of the wet snow and almost everybody’s power was out.

I really don’t want to sound like a nutjob, but seriously, it looks like the end of the world is coming sooner than we had hoped. This is like Day-After-Tomorrow stuff.

My father was nice enough to send me some pictures of wreckage around Buffalo.
