I was on vacation in the Thousand Islands when I received an e-mail from a woman named Lauren. She said she had seen my photos in Buffalo Rising, Buffalo Spree, and Next and that she was interested in having me take pictures of her. I guess she wanted them for use on her website and things like that. Anyway, it’s not very often that I’m actually hired to do work, so I was pretty excited.
After communicating through e-mail and on the phone only a few times, we finally met yesterday to do the photoshoot. She wanted to shoot somewhere interesting, perhaps somewhere that would clash with all of her high-fashion-style clothes, so I suggested that we go where I had my photograph for The Buffalo News taken.
The directions I had printed from Google Maps weren’t as helpful as I had hoped and we got a little bit lost on the way to the location. I called home to get directions from my father and my sister picked up, putting on a deep-old man voice and saying “helllloooo?” repeatedly into the phone. I asked her if I could talk to my father and she said, pretty loudly, “did the girl RAPE you??” I told her that she had not raped me and that we were just sort of lost and that I needed to talk to my father in order to get directions. Anyhow— my sister put my father on the phone and he directed us to the proper photoshoot location.
When we got there, however, there were about five fishermen standing on the wall next to the water by the grain elevator where we that going to shoot in front of. We decided that that would be pretty awkward, so we opted for the empty truck lot adjacent to where the fishermen were standing.
We got out of the car, popped the trunk, and I checked out all of the clothes she brought. After she showed me everything she had, I put together and outfit and she put it on behind her car, while I went over to the water to check out the surroundings. I laughed a little bit when I saw the fishermen staring at us and making whistling noises at Lauren changing behind the car. We got a few more stares when we went back over to the water to take pictures.
After a little bit, we were asked to leave because the truck lot or whatever it was was being locked up. We ended up shooting the rest of the pictures at a nearby junk/wood/storage/weird yard that was basically mosquito heaven. But it was fun. And the pictures look sweet.
